Graham Gosling

A self taught, multi-disciplinary full-time contemporary abstract artist.

My works are inspired by my lived experiences and as such have all got a part of me in them. I want to draw the viewer into the work, make them stop and think about it, ask about it, discover the story behind it and ultimately enjoy it.

In essence I am a story teller at heart and each of my works has a story attached to it that is never obviously displayed.

Each work is both minimal and complex at the same time, delicate and bold, utilising subtle reflected colours, adding extra layers (quite literally) of intrigue and interest. I’m heavily influenced by the Japanese aesthetic and a visit there in 2023 was partly responsible for me deciding to follow this current path.

The Kyujutsu series are all based on targets shot during Japanese archery sessions, something that I've been teaching for over a decade. Each work is uniquely inspired by an individual target face, the holes from the arrows forming the initial pattern for the placement of the pieces over several levels. Each of the pieces is painted on the reverse and the reflected shades given a depth to the work.

The Places of Me series are abstractions of places that hold significant meaning to me. The Places are as I remember them and can be a single wall, a room or a building in its environment. They also employ semi-hidden planes of reflected light to enhance them and draw the viewer closer..

My work has been displayed in galleries (both solo and group shows) and art fairs across Ireland and in the UK and is held in many corporate and private collections.

I am very proud to have been a Board member and then Chairperson of the Dublin based Circa art magazine from 2005 to 2009.

Born and raised in the UK, I have been living in Ireland for over two decades and reside in New Ross in the South East of Ireland.

Outside of the art world you may find me in the dojo where I am a fourth Dan of Yamabushi Ryu Kyujutsu.
